Sesamoiditis

What is Sesamoiditis?

Sesamoiditis is the inflammation of the sesamoid bones. These tiny little bones are located under the head of the first metatarsal bone (big toe) The purpose of the sesamoid bones is to aid in the smooth functioning of the tendons when you move and flex your toes.

Because of the location, these little bones are prone to injury: bruising, stress fractures and crushing. One or both bones may be affected.

Depending on the severity of the injury, the pain can very intense.

Typical Signs and Symptoms of Sesamoiditis:

  • Dull ache to sharp pains.
  • Intense throbbing.
  • Inflammation on the ball of your foot.
  • Walking and running make the pain worse.
  • Pain gets progressively worse, if not treated.
  • Pain on the medial side (inside) of the big toe.

Common Causes of Sesamoiditis:

Sesamoiditis is typically caused by trauma to the sesamoid bones. Jumping down from something and landing hard on the ball of your foot, is common. People who play basketball, volleyball, do dancing, or ballet, often suffer from sesamoiditis.

Wearing flat hard shoes can contribute to the painful condition.

Structurally high arches can put more pressure on the sesamoid bones. For the ladies, those fancy high-heels can make the condition worse, as too much pressure is forced down onto the ball of the foot.

De-generative Arthritis can be a factor. When the bones become rough and pitted, they damage and even tear the tendons that use these little bones as a fulcrum. Pain can be intense in this case.
