Plantar Warts

What is a Plantar Wart?

Warts are a virus. Warts on the bottom of the feet are called Plantar Warts (plantar meaning "bottom surface").

This very common virus thrives in warm, moist environments, like the shower room at a swimming pool. Highly contagious!

One or more heads of the metatarsal bones can become inflamed and it is more common in women.

Metatarsalgia is not in itself a very serious condition, but there is pain and swelling at the bottom of your foot making it difficult to walk or run comfortably. If left untreated, the pressure can lead to foot lesions and even ulcers.

Typical locations of Plantar Warts

Plantar warts are usually located at pressure points, like the ball or heel of the foot. Growth is slow, but steady, and will easily spread, if not treated.

This unique virus has its own blood supply. Sometimes you can see little tiny brown or black dots in the center of the wart. Those are just the ends of the blood vessels, explaining why they often bleed when you cut them back.

Treatment that works for Plantar Warts
A lot of over-the-counter treatments are available, but in my own personal experience, they only subdued the vigilant virus, while I was using them. I tried those products for seven (7) years, but they did not eliminate the culprit. I spent a huge amount of time fussing, scraping, dabbing and dosing, all to only have them grow back again.

The only thing that actually worked for me was to get them "frozen" with liquid nitrogen. Yeah! Not Fun. It meant a trip to the dermatologist once every 10 days or so, for approximately 8 weeks, before I was able rid my poor feet of these annoying and painful warts.

Not all doctors store liquid nitrogen at their clinic. You may have to go to a dermatologist for treatment. Ask your doctor about it, if you have tried everything else.

Some other doctors successfully use laser surgery. This treatment does help to cauterize the wound and prevent infections. Healing is generally quick and uncomplicated.
