Hammertoes
What are Hammertoes?
A
"Hammertoe" is a toe deformity condition where the
middle toe joint is contracted. (Similar to Mallet Toe but, at a
different joint).
The ligaments attached to the joint contract, and pull
the middle (or what is called the second joint), up
into a stiff, rigid position.
The toes become
"hammered" due to an imbalance in the tension of ligaments
and tendons on the top and bottom of the foot.
Once the toe joint position becomes rigid, corns can develop
on the top to protect the joint from shoe pressure. |

What Causes a
Hammertoe?
The condition is often hereditary. If
the bones of the middle toes are longer than the big
toes, they can get squashed in your shoes. In some
cases, the tendons in the foot and up the leg can shorten
and cause a contraction in the toes.
Arthritis can be a culprit too, but
more often than not, it's the type of shoes you wear.
Yup! It's confirmed! Poor-fitting shoes cause the
majority of our foot problems.

Tips To Living with Hammertoes:
 |
Wear comfortable shoes with roomy toe boxes.
If your toes press into the ends of your shoes,
so they actually touch, your shoes are too
short! |
 |
Wear soft, comfy
Prolotex™ Far Infrared
Socks |
 |
If you have deformities, check with your
doctor and ask about the underlying bone
structure. Sometimes they will do surgery to
actually shorten the bones and relax the
ligaments. |
 |
Wear a fresh, clean pair of
Prolotex™ Far Infrared
Socks
every day to help cushion and protect your toes. |
